Talking about sex is often a difficult conversation for parents to have with their children.
A new one-man play, entitled The Big Talks, performed by solo theater performer Tim Collins seeks to demonstrate effective ways in which parents can communicate with their children about sexual health and teen pregnancy.
Host Don Marsh spoke with Collins and Allison Hile, the Executive Director of the Teen Pregnancy and Prevention Partnership. The organization stresses a comprehensive approach to adolescent sexual health and teen pregnancy education, which includes abstinence and contraception.
“Instead of birds and bees we have kids now dealing with hawks and hornets,” Hile said. “Kids have a lot more issues to deal with: videos, internet, TV shows, etc. - things we didn’t see when we were growing up.”
Hile also pointed out that while teen pregnancy rates have decreased over the past decade, the number of teens having sex has not.
Collins performed an except of The Big Talks, a situation in which Michael, the father of a teenager and ten year old, struggles with the complications of raising children in the age of Google and iPhones.
