TWC News Story: One-man show addresses Sexual Assault Prevention

UTICA, N.Y. — An actor brought his award winning show about prevention and bystander intervention to Utica Monday night.

The show depicts four male college students following an on-campus sexual assault. It addresses the dangers of a rape culture that develops when men use degrading language and have hostile attitudes towards women.

The performer, Tim Collins, said the way to eliminate this is through conversation. One issue Collins looks closely at is what constitutes consent.

“There really is no gray area,” said Collins. “The idea is to be connected to your partner at all times. And when you’re maintaining that connection intimacy can move forward. But if there’s ever any ambiguity or confusion, it needs to stop.”

Audience members asked questions and shared thoughts in a talk-back after the show. A Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention resource fair in conjunction with the YWCA also followed the performance.
